Kohima, October 12 (MExN): S Supongmeren Jamir, Nagaland’s lone Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), has raised significant concerns about the ongoing blockages affecting the Dimapur-Kohima four-lane highway project, particularly in the New Chümoukedima Village area. During a meeting with officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in Kohima on October 11, he expressed his worries about the public’s frustrations due to frequent disruptions on this crucial transportation route.
Jamir noted that the project was initially slated for completion by September 2025, according to a report submitted to the Ministry of DoNER. In addition to the highway project, he sought comprehensive updates and explanations regarding delays in the Kohima bypass project and the Kohima–Jessami road project.
NHIDCL Executive Director (Projects) RP Singh outlined the current status of ongoing initiatives, identifying multiple factors leading to the delays, such as natural disruptions, extended monsoon seasons, logistical challenges, and local issues. He reported that the Dimapur bypass project and Package 2 of the Dimapur-Kohima four-lane project have been completed, with significant portions of Package 3 anticipated to finish by December 2025.
Regarding Package 1, which encompasses the New Chümoukedima stretch, protective measures to mitigate frequent landslides have been identified and are pending approval for implementation. Concerning the Kohima bypass project, Singh admitted that progress has been slow in Packages 1, 2, and 4, attributing the delays to technical obstacles, tunnel difficulties, and local concerns.
He assured attendees that corrective actions are being initiated to tackle these challenges, expressing confidence that all projects will be completed within the established timelines. As for the Kohima–Jessami project, Singh indicated that most earlier issues affecting its progress have been resolved, and the expected completion date is now revised to September 2026.
According to a press release from the NPCC, Jamir emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts among all stakeholders and recommended timely communication with the State Government regarding project delays. He announced plans for another coordination meeting with NHIDCL officials and contractors in November, requesting that progress reports on all NHIDCL road development projects in Nagaland be presented at that time.
In concluding the meeting, Jamir reassured the officials and contractors of his full support and commitment to ensuring the timely completion of these projects for the benefit of the public. Accompanying him were Akuonuo Miachieo, General Secretary of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, among others, while Anand Kumar, Deputy General Manager (Projects), attended alongside contractors and consultants involved in various NHIDCL projects in the state.
