Japan has officially declared a nationwide influenza epidemic, arriving five weeks earlier than usual, as health officials warn of a potentially more virulent strain adapting rapidly in the post-pandemic landscape. During the week starting September 22, Japan’s Ministry of Health documented 4,030 flu cases at designated medical facilities-a rise of nearly 1,000 from the previous week-surpassing the official epidemic threshold. Alarmingly, 135 schools, kindergartens, and childcare centers have closed in response to infections among children, marking a threefold increase from last year.

Travel analyst Ashley Harvey, a long-time resident of Japan, echoed these recommendations for visitors. “Travelers should wash their hands frequently, ensure good ventilation in their spaces, and wear masks when necessary,” he advised. Harvey expressed uncertainty about whether the strain circulating in Japan is identical to those found in other countries but affirmed that general precautions remain critical.
