Nobel Committee’s Political Bias: White House’s Reaction to Trump’s Exclusion
The White House criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision on October 10 to award the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, instead of former President Donald Trump. In a statement shared on social media platform X, White House spokesperson Steven Cheung defended Trump, asserting, “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.” Cheung also accused the Nobel Committee of prioritizing politics over peace.
The announcement declaring Machado as the Nobel laureate came earlier in the day, as reported by Jørgen Watne Frydnes, the committee chair, at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. The committee praised Machado as a “brave and committed champion of peace” who “keeps the flame of democracy burning during a growing darkness.”
In the weeks leading up to the announcement, Trump had publicly stated his belief that he was deserving of the award, claiming credit for the resolution of several global conflicts. He remarked, “They [Nobel Committee] will give it to some guy who didn’t do a damn thing,” expressing his frustration over the committee’s choice.
Furthermore, Trump claimed he had “resolved at least eight wars in nine months,” highlighting his involvement in various ceasefires and peace negotiations. Among these claims was his assertion of mediating a crisis between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, a statement that has been denied by India, which maintains that the United States played no role in the ceasefire.
