Cough Syrup Tragedy: Arrest of Sresan Pharma Owner Sparks Outrage
G. Ranganathan, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, based in Kancheepuram, was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the morning of October 9, 2025, in Chennai. He is alleged to have produced contaminated cough syrup that is linked to the deaths of several children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Police sources indicated that Ranganathan was detained at his home in Kodambakkam by members of the Madhya Pradesh SIT in collaboration with the Ashok Nagar police in Chennai. His company is accused of manufacturing the toxic Coldrif cough syrup, which has been connected to 21 fatalities in Madhya Pradesh.
Following his arrest, officials from the SIT and Chennai police conducted a search at the company’s manufacturing facility in Sunguvarchatram, Kancheepuram, to review production records and collect samples for analysis.
Madhya Pradesh police have charged Ranganathan under various laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The facility along the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway has been sealed, and the office in Kodambakkam has also been closed. Local residents reported that the office, previously bustling with activity, was cleared out last week, with staff seen removing equipment and computers late at night.
Laboratory tests conducted in Tamil Nadu confirmed the presence of toxic substances in the Coldrif cough syrup. Consequently, the Madhya Pradesh government has banned the sale of this product as well as all other medicines manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals. This decision was based on a report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh government by the Tamil Nadu Director of Drugs Control on October 4.
