Empowering Futures: GRI Chancellor Advocates Skill-Based Education at Inspiring 38th Convocation
K.M. Annamalai, Chancellor of Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI), highlighted the institution’s commitment to skill-based education during the 38th convocation ceremony held near Dindigul on Sunday. Annamalai announced that GRI offers ten Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc) programs aimed at preparing rural youth for employment and entrepreneurship. He emphasized flexible exit options for students, allowing them to pursue a certificate course, diploma, or degree as they progress through their education.
In collaboration with key government ministries-including Skill Development, Health and Family Welfare, and Education-GRI plans to innovate vocational programs designed to assist school dropouts and underprivileged youth. The goal, Annamalai noted, is to equip these individuals with the skills and confidence needed for future success.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) team at GRI has made significant strides in transforming the campus into an environmentally friendly space through various initiatives, including extensive tree planting. Annamalai mentioned that the institute received commendations from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for its impressive environmental efforts, which aim to showcase GRI’s ecological and rural initiatives to a global audience.
Operating under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, GRI promotes academic freedom across its departments. Annamalai stated, “We design syllabi with national goals in mind,” emphasizing the integration of value-based education with skill development in line with the principles of Nai-Talim.
The Gurukula system, which has been integral to GRI since its establishment, continues to align with contemporary educational policies. Annamalai expressed pride in attracting high-caliber students nationwide through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). Additionally, faculty and scholars are encouraged to pursue national and international funding as well as collaborative research opportunities.
As GRI approaches its golden jubilee celebrations, Annamalai urged stakeholders to reflect on the accomplishments and strategize for a prosperous future. He articulated aspirations for GRI to rank among the top educational institutions both nationally and internationally. This includes increasing student enrollment through inclusive admissions and forging strategic partnerships with industry and academia.
In addressing the graduates, Annamalai conveyed a heartfelt message: “You are entering a new chapter, carrying not just your degrees, but also the values and vision of Gandhigram. Each of you is now an ambassador of GRI. Wherever you go, let your work reflect our values-integrity, service, humility, and academic excellence.”
During the ceremony, Vice Chancellor N. Panchanatham expressed his pride in GRI attaining an A++ grade from NAAC, noting that this year’s graduates are the first to receive the A++ certificate. The event also honored top Indian cricketer V.V.S. Laxman, who was conferred an honorary doctorate. Nearly 2,700 students from the academic years 2023-24 and 2024-25 received their degrees in front of an audience that included Dindigul MP R. Sachidhanandham, Registrar (i/c) M. Sundaramari, Deans, department heads, faculty, staff, and proud parents.
This significant convocation illustrates GRI’s dedication to fostering skilled, socially responsible graduates who will contribute meaningfully to society.
