A facilitation booth was recently established by students from Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) at Mawkdok, the entrance to Sohra (Cherrapunji). The initiative aimed to distribute waste bags to tourist taxi drivers and pamphlets to visitors, promoting sustainable travel under the ‘Clean, Green and Safe Sohra Campaign’. Over 40 MLCU students, along with local community members, took part in a cleaning drive to advocate responsible tourism. This campaign was launched on World Tourism Day, collaborating with Hima Sohra and the Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum, aligned with the global theme of ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’.
The spokesperson for MLCU stated, “The initiative aimed to highlight tourism’s role in promoting sustainability and community development, while engaging students, local stakeholders, and visitors in meaningful activities.” This effort is further supported by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between MLCU and Hima Sohra to enhance rural tourism through improved community participation, which also included the 4th Sohra International Half Marathon.
Additionally, to spread the message of sustainability, flex banners featuring slogans in both English and Khasi were displayed at vital locations such as Laitsohpliah, Umstew, and Lad Mawkma. This two-day celebration, held from September 26-27, underscored the importance of partnerships among academia, local governance, and community stakeholders in fostering tourism that is responsible, inclusive, and sustainable. It illustrated how tourism can significantly contribute to sustainable transformation in Meghalaya.
