On this day last year, the Assamese language received the rare honor of being designated a classical language by the Indian government. Today, on the first anniversary of this recognition, a significant work was launched: “The Classical Heritage of Assamese Language,” which marks the first formal research conducted on the classical Assamese language.
The book was unveiled this afternoon at the Assam Sahitya Sabha Bhawan’s Neha Agarwala Hall by Dr. Diganta Vishal Sharma, the chairperson of the Assamese Language Advisory Council for the Sahitya Akademi and a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati.
Dr. Sharma expressed that the release of this book on the anniversary of Assamese attaining classical status is an important milestone. He congratulated Dr. Fenchi Chutia for producing the first academic research work on Assamese classical language. The Assamese language is recognized in two significant ways: as a modern Indian language and as a classical one.
He emphasized the numerous responsibilities that Assamese speakers have towards upholding the heritage that the Assamese language carries as a classical language. Dr. Sharma stressed the necessity for comprehensive study of the aspects of Indian literary and cultural traditions represented by Assamese literature.
The launch event featured Professor Tarani Chandra Deka, Vice Chancellor of Bongaigaon University, as a speaker. He noted that language lives through usage. He highlighted that Dr. Chutia’s work encompasses a vast range of topics including Assamese language, script, heritage, history, and nation, making it not only beneficial for students but also reliable for competitive examinations.
Prominent guests included Professor Dilip Kumar Kalita, former director of the Ananda Ram Barua Language, Art, and Culture Organization, and Dr. Sangita Saikiya, the research supervisor and head of the Assamese Department at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan.
Professor Kalita referred to the ancient roots of language and the role of oral literature, citing the Assamese Ramayana and the Karbi Ramayana as examples. He discussed how mother-tongue speakers influence a language’s living or dead forms. Dr. Saikiya reiterated the significance of the subject and shared experiences gained during her research, emphasizing the need for academic discourse on Assamese language, literature, and culture beyond Assam.
The event concluded with the national anthem of Assam, with attendance from several dignitaries. The book by Dr. Fenchi Chutia was published by Purvayan Prakashan in Guwahati.
