Additionally, he announced nearly $8 billion in canceled funding for climate-related initiatives in 16 states won by Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
In a post on social media platform X, Vought specified that the $2.1 billion freeze concerns the Red Line Extension and the Red and Purple Modernization Project in Chicago, both of which are managed by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The Red Line Extension aims to expand the train line by 5.5 miles, adding four new stations, while the Red and Purple project focuses on reconstructing existing infrastructure along those routes.
Following the announcement, the DOT issued an interim final rule prohibiting federal grants from utilizing race- and sex-based contracting requirements. They indicated that the CTA projects are now undergoing further administrative review to ensure compliance with this mandate. The DOT emphasized that their actions are consistent with their belief that Americans prioritize the efficiency of infrastructure projects over the demographic backgrounds of those involved in the construction process. “Americans just want these massive projects built quickly and efficiently,” the DOT stated.
Moreover, the department reiterated their stance on the importance of resuming government functions, urging Democrats to cease what they described as “holding the federal budget hostage.” They asserted that benefits for undocumented immigrants should not negatively impact essential investments in the nation’s transportation infrastructure.
