BPF Appoints Hagrama Mohilary as BTC Chief; Oath-Taking on October 3
Kokrajhar, Sept. 27: Hagrama Mohilary, the chief of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is set to take oath as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) on October 3, following a decisive victory in the recent BTC elections. This announcement was made during the BPF’s first Policy Making Body (PMB) meeting at the Bodoland Guest House in Kokrajhar on Saturday, just a day after the election results were declared.
During the meeting, which Mohilary chaired with the presence of newly elected members and senior party leaders, he expressed confidence in the mandate received from the electorate. “Everyone is aware of yesterday’s BTC election results where BPF was victorious. Today, we convened our policy-making body meeting before forming the government,” he stated to the press.
The party plans to meet with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on September 28 to formally claim the right to govern and extend invitations for the swearing-in ceremony. Mohilary emphasized the intention to work collaboratively with all political parties, stating, “Our responsibility is to fulfill people’s expectations. Land rights (mattir patta) will be among our first priorities.”
Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has confirmed his attendance at the oath-taking event, alongside Governor Acharya. The PMB began with a moment of silence to honor the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg and the martyrs of the Bodoland movement. The gathered leaders also decided to pay tribute to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma prior to the swearing-in.
In addition, Mohilary was unanimously elected as the Leader of the Legislature Party, with Rihon Daimari serving as Deputy Leader, Derhasat Basumatary as Chief Whip, and Maheswar Basumatary as Secretary. When questioned about potential alliances, Mohilary stated that the BPF is open to working with any party that respects the interests of the BTC people, saying, “If Congress supports us, we are happy. If BJP looks after our people’s needs, we are also happy to work with them.”
In the BTC polls, the BPF emerged victorious, securing 28 out of 40 seats. Its closest rival, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), won seven seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) obtained just five.
