Shocking Incident: 80 Students Hospitalized After Consuming Biscuits in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
At least 80 students from a district council school in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, were hospitalized after consuming biscuits provided under a nutritional meal program. The affected students, from Keket Jalgaon village school, exhibited symptoms of nausea and vomiting around 8:30 AM on Saturday, officials reported. Immediate action was taken by the village head and local administrators to transport the students to a nearby rural hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.
According to Dr. Babasaheb Ghughe from the rural hospital, approximately 257 students initially reported food poisoning symptoms, with 153 receiving hospital treatment. Seven students with severe symptoms were transferred to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Civil Hospital for further care. In total, the school has 296 students, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
This incident follows a similar case earlier this month where over 80 children at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Ashram School in Mehroona village fell ill after consuming a school meal, exhibiting symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Tragically, a 14-year-old student, Shivam Yadav, died during treatment at Gorakhpur Medical College. Sixty other affected students were treated at Maharshi Devraha Baba Medical College, Deoria.
The contractor responsible for the school hostel mess, Rajesh Kumar Gupta, was arrested and jailed following the incident. The school, which offers free residential education to meritorious students from financially weaker backgrounds, is managed by the state’s Social Welfare Department. Presently, there are 94 such schools operational across the state, according to official information.
