Justice for Batadrava: Gauhati HC Commands Assam Govt to Provide Urgent Compensation for Demolished Homes – Northeast News
Gauhati High Court Orders Compensation for Woman After Illegal Demolition
GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to compensate Rashida Khatun after her house was unlawfully demolished in Nagaon district. The demolition occurred in Batadrava after an arson attack on the local police station in 2022, affecting Khatun and six other families.
The court’s decision stems from a Suo Motu public interest litigation. During the hearing, N.K. Sarma, Khatun’s counsel, revealed that while the other six families had received compensation, Khatun was still awaiting hers. An affidavit presented to the court showed that the government had compensated two families with reinforced concrete houses with Rs 12 lakh each, while four families living in non-concrete structures received Rs 2.5 lakh each.
Senior Government Advocate D. Nath, representing the Assam government, assured the court that the Home Department had already sanctioned the compensation for Khatun. He confirmed that the payment would be made within the next two weeks.
