Celina Jaitly Shares Heartbreaking Experience: ‘Blamed for Harassment, Man Flashed His Private Parts…’
In the wake of a young doctor’s tragic rape and murder in Kolkata, the nation has erupted in outrage with widespread protests and demands for justice. Prominent celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Hrithik Roshan have expressed their condemnation of the incident. Amidst this collective outcry, actress Celina Jaitly has bravely opened up about her own harrowing experiences of harassment and victim-shaming during her school days.
Sharing her story on social media, Celina posted an old photograph of herself from sixth grade, detailing how she was stalked and harassed by boys from a nearby university. These boys would wait outside her school, catcalling and following her rickshaw home. Their behavior soon escalated to throwing stones at her in an attempt to get her attention. Shockingly, instead of support, she faced victim-blaming from a teacher who attributed the harassment to Celina’s so-called “westernized” appearance and lack of modesty.
In her powerful post, Celina wrote, “THE VICTIM IS ALWAYS AT FAULT: In this pic I was in 6th grade only when boys from a nearby university started to wait outside my school. They would follow the school rickshaw making catcalls all the way home every day. I pretended not to notice them and a few days later, they started throwing stones at me in the middle of the road to get my attention. Not one bystander batted an eye. It was my fault for being ‘too westernised’ and not wearing loose clothes and braiding my hair with oil.”
Celina also recounted an even more distressing incident where a man exposed himself to her while she awaited her school rickshaw, an event that left her internalizing blame due to the toxic messaging she had received. She wrote, “It was at this age when a man first flashed his private parts to me… For many years I blamed myself for this incident, thanks to the teacher’s words.”
Ending her post with a call to action, Celina urged society to stand up for victims and affirmed that the fault never lies with them. She concluded with hashtags advocating for justice, emphasizing the need for societal change and protection for all.
