Uproar Over Zubeen Garg: Himanta Warns Against Disrespect Amid Mourning
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a strong warning on Monday to those misusing the name of the late singer Zubeen Garg, emphasizing that any acts of disrespect, violence, or illegal behavior would lead to immediate legal repercussions. “If anyone disrespects Zubeen Garg tonight, they will be arrested immediately. Those who have recently claimed to be his fans and engaged in violence will face strict action. Their actions prevented genuine well-wishers from paying their last respects,” Sarma stated, condemning the chaos that erupted at Sarusajai Stadium.
Police have gathered video evidence of individuals involved in fights and disorderly conduct, and stringent measures are expected to follow. Sarma remarked, “Offensive remarks against one of Assam’s most cherished artists contradict our cultural ethos of compassion and unity. Zubeen would have been deeply hurt to witness this negativity.”
Additionally, Sarma instructed that all shops and businesses be allowed to reopen from 2 PM the next day, warning that any attempts to force them to remain closed would incur legal actions. “Zubeen belonged to the public, not to unruly elements. The transformation of overnight fandom into chaos is unacceptable,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister further condemned assaults on Zubeen’s family and team, including an attack on a pharmacy located on Zoo Road and social media harassment directed toward his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and manager, Siddharth Sharma. He urged citizens possessing evidence to submit it to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for verified actions.
Regarding the investigation into Zubeen’s death, Sarma confirmed that the Assam Police would collaborate with authorities in Singapore, sending a letter rogatory through Gauhati Court and working alongside Singaporean police to gather all relevant evidence.
Sarma’s unwavering position reflects a commitment to restore order and uphold the dignity of Assam’s cultural icon during this period of profound public mourning.
