Kailashahar Substation Fire: Two Workers Injured, Aid Announced by Officials
A sudden fire at the 132 KV electrical substation in Gournagar, Kailashahar sparked panic on the evening of September 20, 2025, resulting in serious injuries to two workers and raising urgent concerns regarding the operations of the Power department. The incident occurred around 7 PM when equipment filled with flammable oil, essential for transformer operations, reportedly ignited. Eyewitness accounts reveal that boiling oil splashed onto the workers, leading to severe burns.
The injured, identified as Shankar Debnath from Kaulikura and Debasish Das from Gobindapur, were swiftly taken to Unakoti District Hospital. However, their treatment faced delays due to a power outage that affected the hospital’s generator, which was eventually restored with assistance from local residents. Debasish Das was later transferred to Unakoti Nursing Care, while Shankar Debnath’s condition was reported as critical. One victim has since been moved to Silchar for advanced medical care, and the other is in GB Hospital in Agartala.
Tinku Roy, the Social Education and Social Welfare Minister, along with Mabswar Ali, Chairman of the Waqf Board, visited both medical centers later that evening. Roy assured reporters that the government remains committed to supporting the injured workers, stating, “If needed, further arrangements will be made for their treatment.”
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirmed that the fire was triggered by an explosion within an 11 KV breaker during routine operations, and he instructed officials to ensure immediate medical assistance. He announced financial aid of Rs 15,000 for the worker sent to Silchar and Rs 10,000 for the one in Agartala, stating, “I am personally monitoring the situation and all efforts are being made to restore power supply.”
This incident follows a recent 23-hour blackout that Kailashahar experienced, with residents expressing frustration over frequent outages attributed to maintenance issues.
