Ambush on Highway: Two Assam Rifles Personnel Killed in Manipur Attack
Two personnel from the Assam Rifles were killed, and five others were injured in an ambush by unidentified terrorists in the Bishnupur district of Manipur on Friday evening. According to a statement from a Defence spokesperson, the attack occurred around 5:50 PM as a convoy of the 33 Assam Rifles was traveling along National Highway 2 in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area. The statement confirmed that two Assam Rifles personnel were martyred, and five others were hospitalized at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, where they are currently in stable condition.
The deceased have been identified as Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Defence spokesperson noted that search operations are underway to apprehend the terrorists involved.
This incident follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur on September 13, his first trip to the state since violence erupted earlier this year. During his visit, which came after a period of relative peace, Modi urged all organizations to pursue the path of peace, emphasizing dialogue, respect, and mutual understanding.
The last significant unrest in Manipur occurred on March 8, when a clash between protesters and security forces resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries in Kangpokpi. This conflict arose during an attempt to enforce “free movement” along the highways.
Throughout the ongoing conflict, there have been several attacks on law enforcement and military personnel. The previous deadly encounter took place in September 2024 when a CRPF soldier was killed, and two police officers were injured near Jiribam.
Manipur’s Governor Ajay Bhalla condemned the attack, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. He acknowledged their bravery in safeguarding the nation and offered prayers for the injured. The Governor reiterated that such acts of violence will not be tolerated, warning that those responsible will be met with strong actions to ensure peace and stability in the region.
