Guwahati Finalizes 81 Vending Zones to Accommodate Over 6,000 Street Vendors

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has officially designated 81 vending zones across the city to provide space for more than 6,000 street vendors, according to Mayor Mrigen Sarania. The allocation of these spots will be phased in over time.

Zone Allocation:

1. Central Zone: 10 free vending areas and one for fruit vendors only, accommodating 1,878 vendors in wards 16, 18, 19, 28, 29, and 30.
2. Dispur Zone: Space for 1,868 vendors across 11 wards (41-49, 59, and 60).
3. East Zone: Five free vending zones in wards 50, 52, 55, 56, and 58, holding 316 vendors.
4. Lokhra Zone: Includes 11 free zones and a time vending zone, accommodating 1,272 vendors in seven wards (10, 21-26).
5. South Zone: Split into 10 free zones and two mobile food vending zones, covering wards 17, 31-35.
6. West Zone: Six free zones for 481 vendors in wards 2, 4, 7, 9, 12, and 15, with special time and mobile vending zones at Lachit Ghat and TRP in Machkhowa.

A senior GMC official explained that the Indigenous Vendors Welfare Association will manage the vending areas, supplying vendors with carts and ensuring order.
