Essential Traffic Guidelines for Durga Puja: Kolkata Police’s Plan Revealed
With Mahalaya and Durga Puja approaching, the Kolkata Police, led by Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, has announced a detailed traffic plan that will be in effect from September 21 until the immersion days in October. Starting on Mahalaya, September 21, no goods vehicles will be allowed to enter the city from 3 AM to 10 PM, except for those transporting essential items such as LPG, petroleum, oxygen, vegetables, medicines, fish, fruits, and milk.
The most significant changes to traffic will occur during the Durga Puja days, from September 25 to October 1, when major roads in North, Central, South, and suburban Kolkata will either become one-way or face partial closures. In North Kolkata, roads like Rabindra Sarani, Dani Ghosh Sarani, and Bagbazar Street will be designated as one-way, with additional restrictions on B.K. Paul Avenue, Bankim Chatterjee Street, and Aurobinda Sarani. Central Kolkata will see B.B. Ganguly Street, Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sarani, and College Street/Bidhan Sarani also converted to one-way traffic. Bus and tram services will be limited in parts of C.R. Avenue, College Street, and Bidhan Sarani.
In South Kolkata, Lake Road and Purna Das Road will switch to one-way, while Harish Mukherjee Road will accommodate two-way traffic from Hazra Road to AJC Bose Road. Restrictions will also impact Ritchie Road and Earl Street, along with several other roads. Additionally, various auto-rickshaw routes will be diverted, particularly in the South-West where Hem Chandra Street, Hari Sabha Street, and Rangalal Street will be affected. Areas in South suburban Kolkata, including G.S. Bose Road, Bose Pukur Road, and Dhakuria Station Road, will face similar regulations.
Parking will be prohibited on multiple key stretches across different areas: in the North, the affected streets include BK Paul Avenue and Baishnab Sett Lane; in Central, Akrur Dutta Lane and Dixon Lane; in the South, Amrita Banerjee Road and Kali Temple Road; and in the South-West, Hem Chandra Street and Rangalal Street, among others.
Public transportation will also experience significant adjustments, with buses and mini-buses being diverted or barred on various routes, including Bidhan Sarani. Auto-rickshaws will be restricted on certain stretches of CIT Road, Maniktala Main Road, and others, while taxis will be prohibited on parts of Maniktala Main Road and restricted on M.G. Road. Furthermore, tram services will not operate on Bidhan Sarani and College Street.
The same traffic regulations will remain in place during the immersion days from October 2 to 8, with added diversions, including rerouting of north-bound traffic from Prince Anwar Shah Road and the relocation of some bus and mini-bus termini. An official emphasized that these measures are designed to ensure public safety and alleviate traffic congestion, advising commuters to prepare for potential diversions and delays.
