Manipur Attack Injures Village Chairman; Kuki Union Seeks Protection
Imphal: Manipur’s Kuki Chief Union has appealed to the government for immediate enhanced security at K. Songlung Part II village in Kangpokpi district after a militant attack on June 25 that left the village chairman injured. The union said alleged NSCN (IM) and ZUF (K) militants advanced from the neighbouring Naga village of Waphong Inthan and carried out the assault, which was repelled when personnel of the 19 Assam Rifles — temporarily deployed in the area — engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat.
During the exchange of fire, village chairman Shemkholal Haokip sustained minor injuries. The union described the June 25 incident as the third major attack on K. Songlung Part II this year, underscoring a pattern of repeated violence against the community.
The union recalled earlier assaults this year, saying more than five houses and a four-wheeler were completely burnt during an attack on January 26. It also alleged that midnight attacks and mob violence on March 10 and 11 destroyed temporary shelters and tarpaulin structures, leaving many residents vulnerable.
Union representatives noted that Waphong Inthan lies close to the site where three TBA pastors — Rev. V. Sitlhou, Rev. Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou — were killed on May 13, linking recent incidents to a broader security concern in the locality.
In light of the continuing unrest, the Kuki Chief Union criticised central security forces, including the CoBRA unit, alleging their operations have focused on Kuki-Zo areas while insufficiently addressing the Waphong Inthan sector. The union’s appeal calls for strengthened and sustained security measures to protect civilians and prevent further attacks.
