Modi Unveils ₹8071-Crore Projects, Pioneering Aizawl’s Railway Connection
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mizoram on Saturday to inaugurate infrastructure projects totaling ₹8,071 crore, marking a significant milestone in the state’s development and connectivity. The highlight of the event was the formal launch of the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, which establishes Aizawl, the state capital, on India’s railway map.
During the event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated three new train services: the Aizawl–Delhi Rajdhani Express (via Anand Vihar Terminal), the Aizawl–Kolkata Express, and the Aizawl–Guwahati Express. Modi reflected on his previous foundation-laying ceremony for the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in November 2014, noting that the project’s completion, achieved despite significant geographic obstacles, embodies the “spirit of transformation and connectivity.”
In addition to the railway line, several projects were inaugurated in sectors such as education, roads, sports, and energy. These included two residential schools worth ₹57 crore, the ₹500 crore Aizawl Western Side Bypass Road, a ₹226 crore gas bottling plant at Mualkhang, major bridges, road links, and a sports hall in Aizawl.
Speaking via videoconference from Lengpui Airport due to bad weather, Modi declared September 13, 2025, a “historic day” for both Mizoram and the Northeast. He emphasized that this railway link represents more than just transportation — it will “revolutionize lives and livelihoods,” invigorating local markets for farmers, creating job opportunities in tourism and hospitality, and improving access to healthcare and education.
The Prime Minister also underscored Mizoram’s significance in India’s Act East Policy, referencing connectivity initiatives like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the forthcoming Sairang–Hmawngbuchhuah railway line to the Bay of Bengal. He praised Mizoram’s cultural heritage, sports accomplishments, and burgeoning startup ecosystem while promising additional investments in youth development and tourism.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw described the railway line as an “extraordinary engineering feat,” noting its passage through 45 tunnels and over 55 major bridges, including one that surpasses the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar. The commencement of cargo operations and the introduction of refrigerated coaches are expected to facilitate broader market access for Mizoram’s produce, including ginger, turmeric, and fruits.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma characterized the day as “defining” for the state, asserting that the Prime Minister’s initiatives will tightly integrate Mizoram with the rest of India, unlocking new avenues for growth and development.
