Trump Tariffs Threaten US Corn Sales: Howard Lutnick Warns India Faces Tough Challenges Amid 1.4 Billion Potential Buyers

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has once again defended former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on India, claiming the country is “taking advantage” of the United States. During a press conference on September 13, Lutnick expressed his concerns regarding India’s trade practices, particularly in light of the ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.

Lutnick’s comments came in response to a question about whether the U.S. was mishandling its relationships with key allies such as Brazil, China, and India. He specifically criticized India’s refusal to purchase American corn, despite its population of 1.4 billion, questioning, “Why won’t 1.4 billion people buy one bushel of U.S. corn?” He added, “Doesn’t that rub you the wrong way that they sell everything to us and they won’t buy our corn? They put tariffs on everything.”

The Secretary reiterated that India needs to lower its tariffs or risk facing challenges in its trade dealings with the U.S. He emphasized a perceived imbalance in the trade relationship, stating, “The relationship is one way; they sell to us and take advantage of us. They block us from their economy while we remain open for them.” He highlighted Trump’s stance on “fair and reciprocal trade” as essential for future dialogue.

Lutnick affirmed that India has been urged to “bring down your tariffs” and treat the U.S. in a manner that mirrors how America treats Indian goods. He characterized the tariffs as a necessary measure to “right years of wrong,” reinforcing that the U.S. must implement reciprocation. He remarked, “You either accept it or you’re going to have a tough time doing business with the world’s greatest consumer.”

Under the Trump administration, the U.S. imposed substantial tariffs on India, including a 50% tariff on various imports and a 25% tariff on Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil-some of the highest tariffs placed on any nation. India’s response has been to label these actions as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” maintaining that its energy procurement choices are dictated by national interests and market conditions.

As trade negotiations between the United States and India continue to evolve, the ramifications of these tariffs and the broader implications of U.S. trade policy remain critical topics. The dynamic between the two countries reflects an ongoing tug-of-war over trade practices, tariffs, and economic reciprocity that could define their future relationship on the global stage.

With trade tensions simmering, the dialogue between U.S. officials and their Indian counterparts will likely play a pivotal role in shaping economic relations moving forward.
