Tribute to D.D. Lapang: Remembering Meghalaya’s Former CM at 91
Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Donwa Dethwelson (D.D.) Lapang, a prominent figure in the state’s political landscape, passed away on the night of September 12 at the age of 91 at Bethany Hospital in Shillong. Dr. Lapang, a four-time Chief Minister and a long-serving MLA from Nongpoh, was regarded as one of Meghalaya’s most significant leaders, known for his resilience, humility, and commitment to public service throughout a nearly five-decade political career.
Born on April 10, 1934, in the Ri-Bhoi district, Lapang began his journey as a road laborer before becoming a Sub-Inspector of schools. He entered politics in 1972 as an independent candidate, later joining the Indian National Congress (INC). His rise within the party was steady, and he held several key positions over the years.
Dr. Lapang served multiple terms as Chief Minister from 1992 to 2010, guiding Meghalaya through various political changes. In 2018, he resigned from the Congress, citing the neglect of senior leaders, and subsequently joined the National People’s Party (NPP). Even in his later years, he remained active in governance, serving as an Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya until his retirement in October 2024.
Following the announcement of his death, tributes flowed in from across the political spectrum. Former MP Vincent H. Pala expressed profound sorrow, respecting Lapang as “a mentor, guide, and father figure whose wisdom and commitment to the people of Meghalaya will always be cherished.” Other leaders remembered him as someone who “never forgot his roots” and referred to him as “a symbol of perseverance and humility.”
Dr. Lapang is survived by his wife, Amethyst Lynda Jomes Blah, and their family. His legacy of leadership and influence will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on Meghalaya’s political and social fabric.
