Massive Tax Evasion of Over Rs 8 Crore Discovered at NHPC Dam Site
A significant tax evasion case has emerged in Assam, where the state GST department has uncovered irregularities involving a company responsible for constructing the concrete gravity dam of NHPC’s 2,000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project at Gerukamukh, located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. During a raid this week, officials reported recovering Rs 8.2 crore, with expectations that this amount will increase as the investigation proceeds.
Monuj Kumar Dowari, the Superintendent of State Tax who led the 10-member enforcement team, announced, “A significant tax evasion case involving M/s BGS SGS SOMA Joint Venture, the firm tasked with building the Concrete Gravity Dam at Gerukamukh under NHPC, has been uncovered.” The raid, which commenced on Tuesday, aimed to identify irregularities in tax filings and transactions. Dowari noted, “The swift action resulted in an on-the-spot recovery of Rs 8.2 crore, marking one of the department’s most successful enforcement drives in recent months, and underscoring its strengthened focus on data-driven tax compliance.”
The Subansiri project is one of the largest hydroelectric developments in Northeast India, but it has faced numerous delays over the years. The recent discovery of extensive tax evasion associated with its construction adds another layer of scrutiny to this high-profile endeavor.
