GUWAHATI: India has expressed serious concerns regarding the recruitment of its nationals into the Russian Army, advising citizens to steer clear of such offers, which it deems “fraught with danger.” On September 11, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the issue has been raised with officials in both New Delhi and Moscow, particularly focusing on the release of Indians currently serving.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the government has consistently highlighted the dangers associated with this recruitment over the past year. “We are also in touch with the families of the affected Indian citizens. We once again strongly urge all Indian nationals to stay away from any offers to join the Russian Army, as this is a course fraught with danger,” Jaiswal stated.
This issue was previously brought up in Parliament. In July, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that 127 Indians were serving in the Russian armed forces. He noted that the services of 98 individuals had been terminated following ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Moscow, including high-level negotiations.
Currently, 13 Indian nationals remain in the Russian Army, with reports indicating that 12 of them are missing, as per Russian authorities. Singh mentioned that India has urged Moscow to provide updates on their status and to ensure their safety and prompt release.
For those individuals whose services have been terminated, Indian missions in Russia have assisted with their return by providing necessary travel documents and arranging tickets when needed. The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the security and welfare of Indians abroad, instructing missions to act swiftly on any assistance requests.
