ENSF Issues Urgent 7-Day Ultimatum Over Teacher Shortage in Eastern Nagaland
The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Government of Nagaland’s Department of School Education, demanding the immediate retention and redeployment of teachers in schools across Eastern Nagaland. This request comes in response to the recent teacher rationalisation exercise that left several schools without replacements.
In a memorandum sent to the Commissioner and Secretary of the Department, the ENSF expressed serious concerns regarding the teacher rationalisation order issued on August 22, identified as No. EDN/PLN/RATIONALIZATION/2023. The order resulted in the transfer of numerous teachers from Eastern Nagaland schools, without sufficient replacements being appointed for the sanctioned positions.
The federation highlighted that the current lack of subject teachers has “severely hampered” academic progress for students in the region. It also referred to a prior representation made to the department on August 26, under reference number ENSF/DoSE/Rep.-01/25-26, which has yet to receive a response.
Feeling they have “no other option,” the ENSF warned that they will be forced to initiate a peaceful, phased agitation if the government does not address their demands within the stipulated seven days. The federation reaffirmed that their movement will persist until the issues are resolved and their demands met.
This ultimatum, which was signed by ENSF President Nuheymong Yim and Secretary General James Konyak, reflects the growing dissatisfaction among student organizations in Eastern Nagaland regarding deficiencies in the education sector, particularly the critical shortage of subject teachers in rural and remote schools.
