Violence Erupts: Police Clash with Koch-Rajbongshi Protesters in Assam
Tensions escalated this evening in Golakganj, Dhubri, after police used a lathi charge to disperse protesters demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the Koch-Rajbongshi community. The demonstration was organized by the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union, with support from the Dhubri West District AKRSU.
Hundreds of community members and local residents took to the streets, chanting slogans and marching to urge the Assam government for prompt recognition of the Koch-Rajbongshi community as a Scheduled Tribe. Reports indicate that law enforcement officials employed force against the crowd, resulting in injuries to over a hundred individuals, who were subsequently treated at nearby medical facilities.
Both the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union and Dhubri West District AKRSU condemned the police action, labeling it as “excessive and unjustified,” and vowed to persist in their advocacy for community rights. Concerns have been raised regarding a potential bandh, as this could disrupt daily life, commerce, and traffic in the area. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident or the status of the injured.
Additionally, details about the reasons behind calls for the transfer of the Superintendent of Police (SP) Dhubri and Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golakganj are still awaited. The situation remains tense as the district waits for a response from the administration to prevent the likelihood of a bandh.
