Violence Erupts: Goalpara Police Clash with Koch Rajbongshi Protesters for ST Rights
Tension escalated in Goalpara district on September 10, as members of the Koch Rajbongshi community protested, demanding that the Assam government officially recognize them as a Scheduled Tribe. The demonstration, organized by local community leaders and activists, attracted over a hundred participants who gathered in a public area to voice their concerns.
Protesters urged the state government to expedite the process of granting Scheduled Tribe status, citing the historical marginalization of the Koch Rajbongshi people and highlighting the urgent need for socio-economic development within the community.
During the protest, authorities deployed a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Reports indicate multiple injuries among both men and women during the clash. Local officials confirmed that calm was eventually restored, and those injured received medical assistance.
Organizers of the protest condemned the police’s actions, asserting that their demonstration was peaceful and aimed only at drawing attention to their longstanding demands. They accused the administration of using excessive force and called for an immediate investigation into the incident.
Authorities have urged the public to maintain peace, assuring that the government is aware of the community’s demands and promising that the matter will be addressed through appropriate channels.
