Cotton University Honors Bhupenda: Celebrating a Legacy of Inspiration
Cotton University in Guwahati celebrated the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on Monday, marking a significant occasion in its year-long centenary observance for one of its esteemed alumni. The event, titled ‘Geet Aru Kotharey,’ honored the legendary musician, lyricist, composer, and cultural icon with a special program designed to reflect on his remarkable contributions.
The invited speaker, renowned singer Dr. Sankar Patowary, was the first researcher from Assam to delve into the songs of Dr. Hazarika. He delivered a compelling talk on the legacy of the maestro, underscoring Dr. Hazarika’s vision of harmony, social justice, and cultural integration through music. Dr. Patowary highlighted the importance for Assamese society to reflect on Hazarika’s works and grasp the deeper meanings within his timeless creations. He also performed several of Hazarika’s songs, such as Natun Asom Giri, Sagor Sangame, and Xitore Xemeka Rati.
The ceremony began with the lighting of a lantern, followed by a floral tribute to a portrait of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and a student chorus rendition of the song Asom Amar Rupohi. The event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka, who paid homage to Dr. Hazarika’s enduring influence on music, literature, and societal values. He emphasized the maestro’s unique ability to weave classical music elements into his compositions.
Cultural performances by the university’s students were a standout feature of the event, with numerous presentations of Dr. Hazarika’s immortal songs, further celebrating his rich musical heritage.
