AJP Rallies Against CAA in Guwahati, Pledges Stronger Resistance Efforts
Guwahati: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) intensified its opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Monday by staging a significant demonstration in Mirza, located in Assam’s Kamrup district. The protest commenced with party members lighting candles in front of a portrait of the celebrated musician Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, honoring his legacy.
Participants took a collective pledge to resist the CAA, asserting that the law threatens Assam’s cultural and ethnic identity. As the protests progressed, hundreds of AJP supporters paraded through Mirza’s streets, chanting slogans against the CAA and displaying banners that criticized the central government’s recent decision to prolong the Act’s implementation deadline by another ten years.
Addressing the crowd, AJP joint secretary Pankaj Lochan Goswami accused the BJP of using the CAA as a tool to grant citizenship to Hindu foreigners, potentially securing electoral gains in the future. He questioned, “Why should Assam accept the CAA when other northeastern states have rejected it?”
The protesters firmly stated that the people of Assam would never accept this legislation. They condemned the CAA as unjust, undemocratic, and a direct threat to the rights of indigenous communities.
