China’s Ambassador Calls for Harmony and Win-Win Cooperation with India
China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, underscored the enduring spirit of cooperation between India and China during a speech at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi on September 8. His address marked a seminar commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Ambassador Xu emphasized the crucial need to strengthen bilateral ties in light of the rapidly changing global landscape.
“China-India relations have experienced twists and turns, but friendly cooperation has always been the dominant theme,” Xu stated, referencing recent high-level meetings between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan and Tianjin that have set a positive trajectory for future relations. He urged both nations to adopt a strategic, long-term view of their relationship, advocating for a partnership rather than rivalry, and framing each other as opportunities for development instead of threats.
The ambassador highlighted the increasing economic and cultural exchanges, noting that over 240,000 visas have been issued to Indian citizens this year alone. He expressed readiness to enhance collaboration in various sectors, including political parties, legislatures, think tanks, media, and youth, to further foster people-to-people connections.
Reflecting on the seminar’s theme, Xu remarked on the importance of remembering history and honoring those who fought for peace. He pointed out the collective responsibility today in preserving peace amidst global challenges, warning that “unilateralism and acts of bullying are on the rise” in a world entering a new era of turbulence. He stressed that humanity faces a critical choice between peace and war, dialogue and confrontation, and win-win cooperation versus zero-sum games.
The ambassador emphasized the role of both countries, stating that China is willing to work with Global South nations, including India, to promote an accurate understanding of World War II history, foster genuine multilateralism, and reject hegemony and power politics. In a closing call to action, he expressed hope that while history cannot be changed, the future can be positively shaped. “Let us draw lessons from history, carry forward the great spirit of the War of Resistance, and promote China-India friendship and cooperation with a more proactive attitude,” he concluded. He urged that “the torch of peace be passed on from generation to generation” and that the light of civilization continues to shine brightly.
