Democrats Rage Against Trump’s ‘Chipocalypse Now’: ‘Chicago Is Not Your War Zone, Donald!’
Democratic leaders are fiercely condemning former President Donald Trump after he shared an AI-generated image depicting himself as a character from the 1979 film “Apocalypse Now,” accompanied by menacing messages aimed at Chicago. The image, which he titled “Chipocalypse Now,” featured a caption that read, “I love the smell of deportations in the morning…” Trump further proclaimed, “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” alluding to his recent executive order that rebranded the Department of Defense to the Department of War.
These provocative remarks emerge as reports surface regarding the Trump administration’s consideration of deploying the National Guard in Chicago, a move that has sparked strong opposition among Illinois officials. California Governor Gavin Newsom did not hold back in his criticism, stating that Trump is exploiting military resources for political maneuvers. On social media platform X, Newsom warned, “The President of the United States is deploying the military onto US streets and using our troops like political pawns. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BECOME NUMB TO THIS.”
This isn’t the first time Newsom and Trump have clashed; tensions flared when federal troops were sent to Los Angeles during anti-ICE protests. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also voiced his concerns, asserting that Trump’s rhetoric represents a perilous escalation. “The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city; this is not a joke. This is not normal. Donald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator,” Pritzker expressed on social media.
Amidst this political storm, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson defended his city, highlighting recent improvements in violent crime rates while countering Trump’s threatening tone. “The President’s threats are beneath the honor of our nation, but the reality is that he wants to occupy our city and break our Constitution,” Johnson stated. “We must defend our democracy from this authoritarianism by protecting each other and protecting Chicago from Donald Trump.”
In a swift response, Illinois’ Democratic senators also condemned Trump’s comments. Senator Tammy Duckworth, a combat veteran, directly rebuked Trump, writing, “No Donald, Chicago is not your war zone.” Senator Dick Durbin criticized the former president for misusing his influence, suggesting, “Instead of asking ChatGPT to make him memes and threatening to turn our brave armed forces against American cities, Trump should be focused on his weak jobs reports, record measles cases, tariffs hurting American farmers and businesses, and hidden Epstein files.”
As tensions between Trump and Democratic leaders escalate, the discourse reveals deepening divisions regarding the use of military power within domestic politics. With debates intensifying around Trump’s approach, the ongoing situation in Chicago serves as a focal point for broader discussions about governance, responsibility, and the future of American democracy.
This story continues to develop, reflecting the polarized atmosphere in U.S. politics today as leaders confront challenges both at home and abroad.
