US Industry Minister Howard Lutnick stated on Bloomberg TV that India is expected to apologize and enter negotiations with President Donald Trump within the next couple of months. He outlined three specific conditions for the removal of the 25% extra tariff imposed on Indian imports: India must cease its oil imports from Russia, exit the BRICS alliance, and show support for the United States. Lutnick emphasized that if India wishes to maintain its role as a mediator between Russia and China, it will need to decide whether to align with the dollar or the U.S.; otherwise, it faces the consequence of a 50% tariff.
Despite the ongoing trade tensions, Lutnick expressed optimism that India would soon engage in discussions regarding a bilateral trade agreement. He affirmed that the U.S. is always open to dialogue.
In response to Lutnick’s comments, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed India’s intention to continue trade discussions with the U.S. He emphasized the value of the Quad alliance as a platform for addressing various international issues and mentioned that any leaders’ meetings would be determined through diplomatic negotiations among member countries. Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Jaiswal reiterated India’s support for peace efforts and hopes for a swift resolution to the war.
This declaration from Lutnick coincides with Trump’s concerns regarding India’s alignment with China. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump remarked that it seems the U.S. has lost both India and Russia to China, expressing hopes for their future.
As relations between the U.S. and India develop, the need for clear communication and cooperation remains critical in achieving mutually beneficial trade agreements.
