African Swine Fever Hits Arunachal: Restrictions on Pigs in West Siang
West Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh is currently facing an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), confirmed by officials on September 4. In an effort to curb the disease’s spread, the district administration has implemented a ban on the import of pigs from outside the district. Additionally, inter-district transportation of pigs and piglets has been prohibited, as stated by West Siang District Magistrate Liyi Bagra.
To ensure that pigs destined for slaughter are safe, the administration has mandated that all such animals undergo an anti-mortem inspection conducted by a veterinary officer. Animals inspected must also be ear tagged. This regulation applies not only to professional butchers but also to individuals slaughtering pigs for personal use.
Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of these measures, warning that anyone who fails to comply with the regulations will face legal repercussions under applicable laws. The administration aims to protect both livestock and public health by reinforcing these controls during this critical time.
