Defying Trump’s Ego: Congressman Unveils ‘Nobel’ Justification for Bold US Tariffs on India
US Congressman Ro Khanna has voiced strong criticism against President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a hefty 50% tariff on Indian goods, emphasizing that the U.S. must not let Trump’s ego jeopardize the strategic partnership with India. Khanna, a Democrat and co-chair of the India Caucus, highlighted that Trump’s tariff is the highest on Indian imports, surpassed only by Brazil and even exceeding tariffs on China. He argued that this move harms not only India’s exports of leather and textiles to the United States but also U.S. manufacturers and exports to India.
In a video posted on his X account, Khanna elaborated on the consequences of these tariffs, stating that they could drive India closer to nations like China and Russia. The Congressman contends that the tariffs fundamentally undermine three decades of bipartisan efforts to strengthen U.S.-India relations.
Khanna further speculated that one of the motivations behind Trump’s tariff policy may be rooted in personal grievances, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize, a contrast to Pakistan’s willingness to do so. He said, “Now, why is this happening? Prime Minister Modi refused to nominate Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize. Well, Pakistan did. And India has said that the border dispute with Pakistan is an internal matter, refusing to give Donald Trump credit.”
He continued, expressing concern for the impact of Trump’s actions on Indian-Americans who previously supported him. “We can’t allow the ego of Donald Trump to destroy a strategic relationship with India that is key to ensuring that America leads and not China. To all those Indian-Americans who voted for Donald Trump, I’m asking you, where are you today while he destroys this relationship?”
The heightened tariffs have brought U.S.-India relations to a troubling low. Indian officials have asserted that they remain in communication with the U.S. on trade issues and are open to finalizing a bilateral trade agreement. However, key Trump advisors have repeatedly accused India of benefiting unfairly from its purchases of Russian oil.
Trump recently claimed credit for ending military tensions between India and Pakistan in May and reportedly sought Modi’s endorsement for a Nobel Peace Prize nomination during a June 17 phone call. According to The New York Times, Modi clarified that U.S. involvement had “nothing to do with the recent cease-fire,” stating that issues had been “settled directly between India and Pakistan.”
A report from investment firm Jefferies indicated that the tariffs on Indian goods stem primarily from Trump’s “personal pique” over not being permitted to mediate in India-Pakistan relations. “India has never accepted third-party intervention in its relations with Pakistan, and this remains a ‘red line’,” the report suggested.
As the two nations navigate this complex situation, the future of U.S.-India relations now hangs in the balance, overshadowed by the implications of Trump’s tariffs and his own political aspirations. The evolving dynamics highlight the critical need for a collaborative approach to maintain a strong strategic partnership that can withstand domestic challenges and international pressures.
