Congress Exposes BJP’s Shillong Protest as a Desperate Cover for Fraud
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party’s protest outside the Congress Bhavan in Shillong. The MPCC characterized the protest as a “desperate distraction” aimed at diverting attention from the Modi government’s “deepening crisis of credibility.”
The BJP’s demonstration stemmed from allegations that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother during the ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar. The MPCC has refuted these claims, asserting that no such remarks were made. They described the protest as a familiar BJP strategy to exploit grief, religion, and identity when faced with their own failures regarding unemployment, inflation, and electoral malpractice.
Additionally, the Congress accused the BJP of dodging accountability over “systematic voter roll manipulation.” They highlighted findings in Karnataka, where over 100,000 suspicious entries were discovered among 650,000 voters in the Mahadevapura constituency. Reports noted irregularities like duplicate registrations across states, fictitious addresses such as “House No. 0,” and multiple voters registered at single-room dwellings, including a brewery. The MPCC cautioned that if significant manipulation like this can occur in Karnataka, it could easily happen elsewhere, including Meghalaya.
The Congress described the alleged voter fraud as part of a larger “authoritarian pattern,” claiming that the BJP has hollowed out institutions, suppressed the media, influenced education, and fostered violence against minorities. They accused the ruling party of circumventing Parliament and weaponizing oversight agencies, reducing democracy to mere “stagecraft devoid of accountability.”
“The BJP’s protest in Shillong is not a moral stand-it is a smokescreen,” the MPCC asserted. They emphasized that the true issue lies not in a fabricated insult to the Prime Minister’s family but in a persistent assault on the rights of the people, the Constitution, and the democratic principles of India.
