PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Manipur: Date Announced After Ethnic Violence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13. According to officials in Aizawl and news agency PTI, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram as part of his itinerary. Following this, he is expected to travel to Manipur, marking his first trip since the outbreak of ethnic violence in the region in May 2023. Multiple government officials from Mizoram have reported this information; however, the final travel details have yet to be officially confirmed, and authorities in Imphal have not validated the visit.
Preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit are currently underway in Mizoram. Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena held a high-level meeting with law enforcement and various government departments to discuss arrangements for the visit. Key topics included security measures, traffic management, and protocols for welcoming the Prime Minister, as well as how government employees, students, and farmers could participate in the inauguration ceremony at Lammaul in Aizawl.
The new railway line spans 51.38 kilometers and is a component of the Centre’s Act East Policy, which aims to improve connectivity and economic integration in India’s northeastern region. This development will link Aizawl with Silchar in Assam, thereby strengthening the state’s connection with the national railway network.
Modi’s potential visit is particularly significant as it comes after severe ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, following a “Tribal Solidarity March” organized by the All Tribal Student Union of Manipur (ATSUM). This protest was ignited by a recommendation from the Manipur High Court to include the majority Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list. Tribal groups, especially the Kuki-Zo, expressed concerns that this status would allow Meiteis to acquire land in the constitutionally protected hill districts, thus undermining their existing affirmative action benefits. The march led to violent confrontations between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, quickly escalating throughout the region.
