Gauhati High Court Leads Urgent Consultation to Protect Girl Children
On August 30, the Gauhati High Court’s Juvenile Justice Committee held a state-level multi-stakeholder consultation focused on “Safeguarding the Girl Child: Towards a Safer and Enabling Environment.” This event was organized in collaboration with the Assam Child Protection Society and UNICEF. Justice Kalyan Rai Surana, the committee’s chairperson, inaugurated the day-long consultation, which attracted adolescents, young adults, and delegates from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland to discuss the current state of child protection.
During the event, participants shared personal experiences related to child marriage, violence, and resilience. Panel discussions centered on the need for improved inter-departmental cooperation, the functions of the judiciary and law enforcement, and the challenges faced by frontline workers in the child protection field. Experts highlighted the importance of strengthening data systems, improving victim support services, providing accessible helplines, and ensuring the safety of children in online environments.
This consultation is a preparatory step for the 11th Annual National Child Protection Stakeholders’ Consultation, scheduled for October under the Supreme Court of India’s guidance. The theme for 2025, “Safeguarding the Girl Child,” underscores the pressing need to confront issues such as violence against girls, child marriage, trafficking, and online exploitation, all of which significantly impact children’s health, education, and overall well-being across the nation.
As the event concluded, participants collectively reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the girl child, recognizing it as both a legal and moral obligation. Such efforts will require thorough coordination among the judiciary, government, civil society, and local communities. Prominent figures in attendance included Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, DGP Harmeet Singh, and senior officials from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, highlighting the collaborative spirit necessary for progress in child protection initiatives.
