Justice Served: Three in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi Sentenced for Minor Assault
A special POCSO court in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district has sentenced three men to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting three children in 2017. The court, presided over by the Special Judge (POCSO) in Nongpoh, found the defendants guilty under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.
In addition to the prison sentences, each convict was fined Rs 20,000. The assaults occurred on June 28, 2017, when the perpetrators were inebriated, according to police reports. The chargesheet for this case was filed on October 23, 2017.
In a related case, a special court in Khliehriat recently imposed lengthy sentences on two men convicted of similar offenses against children under the POCSO Act. One of the men, Sawen Tangliang, received a particularly severe sentence of 25 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 30,000 after being found guilty by the Special Judge (POCSO) court in East Jaintia Hills District.
