On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, India will celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, a significant Hindu festival marking the birth of Lord Ganesha. In accordance with the 2025 holiday calendar from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), both public-sector banks and private banking institutions will be closed across the country for the day. Bank holidays in India are governed by the RBI under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which outlines RTGS holidays, as well as other regional and national holidays, including the mandatory weekly closures on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. According to the RBI calendar, there are a total of 15 designated bank holidays in August 2025.

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India, particularly in Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The festival lasts for ten days and involves various rituals, community gatherings, and cultural activities.

It’s important to note that while many banks across India will be closed, the operational status can vary by city. For instance, banks in cities such as Agartala, Aizawl, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram will remain open. Conversely, major cities like Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, and Vijayawada will see banks closed for the holiday.

Despite the physical closures of bank branches in certain areas, essential banking services will still be accessible through online and self-service platforms, including mobile and online banking for fund transfers, balance inquiries, and bill payments. NEFT and RTGS services will also be available during operational hours. Customers are encouraged to utilize ATMs for withdrawals and card transactions, and they can request chequebooks or demand drafts online. To ensure uninterrupted service during the holiday, customers should plan their in-branch visits accordingly and consider using online banking platforms as their primary means of access.
