Emphasizing Integrity: Sudershan Reddy on the Non-Political VP Role
Lucknow, August 26 (IANS): Justice B. Sudershan Reddy (retd), the Vice Presidential candidate representing the INDIA bloc, initiated a tour in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, receiving a warm welcome from leaders of the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP). During his visit, Reddy called for their support, emphasizing that the role of Vice President should transcend political affiliations.
“I stand with constitutional values. The post of Vice President is not a political office; it is a constitutional responsibility,” Reddy stated before reporters at the SP state office in Lucknow. He reflected on his long association with constitutional duties, which began in 1971 when he joined the Bar Association. He expressed his commitment to uphold the values promoted by distinguished predecessors such as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Dr. Zakir Hussain, K.R. Narayanan, and Hamid Ansari.
Reddy also lauded the Samajwadi Party for its historical contributions and acknowledged the impact of socialist leaders. “We learned significantly from leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia. As someone from South India, I aim to connect with Hindi-speaking populations. We have garnered support from various parties beyond the INDIA bloc, thanks largely to the efforts of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. I have also met with Arvind Kejriwal and extend my appeal for support to all parties,” he said.
In response to questions regarding the 130th Constitutional Amendments Bill, Reddy remarked that a Joint Parliamentary Committee has been established to examine the issue and report its findings. Addressing concerns about institutions deviating from their foundational principles, he stressed the need for a reassessment and reinforcement of their values.
Akhilesh Yadav, the SP chief, strongly backed Reddy’s candidature, asserting, “Those who value justice should support B. Sudershan Reddy out of genuine conscience. He is an exceptional candidate in the pursuit of social justice,” while criticizing the BJP for attempting to associate the Vice President’s office with its ideological stance.
Later, Reddy and Yadav engaged in discussions with SP and Congress MPs at Hotel Taj. The Vice Presidential election is set for September 9, where Reddy will compete against the BJP-led NDA’s candidate, C.P. Radhakrishnan.
