Consumer prices in Nagaland surged nearly twice the national average in the first quarter of 2025, with the State’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) reaching 8.89% and food inflation (CFPI) hitting 10.38% based on the 2022 reference year, according to data from the State’s Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES). In contrast, the national CPI recorded a lower rise of 4.26% in January, 3.61% in February, and 3.34% in March, leading to an average of 3.74% for the January-March quarter, as reported by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
During the same period, the all-India Consumer Food Price Index showed figures of 5.97%, 3.75%, and 2.69%, averaging 4.14% over the quarter. This report is significant as it marks the first state-level series for rural, urban, and combined sectors, utilizing the revised base year of 2022=100 and incorporating an updated weighting schema.
In Nagaland, the General Index for the first quarter was recorded at 108.91 in rural areas, 108.68 in urban areas, and 108.89 in the combined sector. Correspondingly, the CFPI stood at 111.11 for rural, 110.05 for urban, and 110.38 for the combined sector. Rural areas witnessed an inflation rate of 8.91% and food inflation at 11.31%. In urban areas, inflation was slightly lower at 8.68%, with food inflation at 10.05%.
From January to March, the rural CPI increased by 0.51% during both months, while urban CPI saw a modest rise of 0.07% in January to February and then 0.68% in February to March. The combined sector experienced a CPI increase of 0.32% and 0.70% over the same periods. Food prices mirrored these trends, with rural CFPI rising by 0.54% and 0.48%, and urban CFPI showing growth of 0.05% and 0.82%.
For the first time, DES released data with district-level indices based on the 2022 benchmark. In urban areas, Chümoukedima experienced the highest CPI rise at 10.73% and CFPI at 13.98%, while Kohima recorded the lowest at 6.45% (CPI) and 8.55% (CFPI). In rural sectors, Noklak saw the highest CPI increase at 11.51%, while Shamator led in CFPI growth at 13.96%. Mokokchung and Phek reported the lowest CPI and CFPI figures at 5.96% and 8.10%, respectively. Across both sectors, Noklak registered the highest CPI rise at 10.41% and Chümoukedima led in CFPI growth with 13.14%. Conversely, Kohima and Phek reported the lowest CPI at 5.87% and CFPI at 8.82%.
