Trump’s Bold Threat: Will He Deploy Military Forces to ‘Clean Up’ Baltimore’s Crime Crisis?

Former President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric regarding crime in American cities, threatening to deploy military forces to Baltimore if needed. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “But if Wes Moore needs help, like Gavin Newsom did in L.A., I will send in the ‘troops’ to quickly clean up the Crime.” His remarks targeted the Democratic governors of Maryland and California, as he continued to advocate for military involvement in urban law enforcement.

This latest threat comes after Trump has previously suggested replicating a deployment of National Guard troops in cities nationwide, following their presence in Washington, D.C. Critics contend that Trump’s approach is more politically motivated than genuinely aimed at addressing crime. Maryland Governor Wes Moore responded, asserting that Trump “would rather attack his country’s largest cities from behind a desk than walk the streets with the people he represents.” Moore emphasized the need for collaborative leadership rather than “1980s scare tactics,” arguing that effective crime reduction requires understanding local concerns.

Trump’s proposals mark a significant shift from traditional presidential interventions, which typically focus on responding to natural disasters or civil unrest. His deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles last June amidst immigration-related protests was met with strong opposition from Governor Newsom, who accused Trump of inciting chaos for political gain. Earlier this month, Trump dispatched National Guard troops to D.C. under the guise of combating crime, despite a reported 26% decline in violent crime in the area compared to the previous year.

According to NBC News, about 2,000 National Guard troops, authorized to carry weapons, were stationed in D.C. Law enforcement has reportedly made hundreds of arrests since the increased military presence began. Moore criticized Trump’s comments as tone-deaf, stating, “It’s because they have not walked our streets… but not actually working with us to ensure our streets are safe.”

In his Truth Social post, Trump specifically referenced Baltimore’s crime issues, asserting he would prefer Moore “to clean up this Crime disaster” before a potential visit. Baltimore’s homicide rate has actually seen a more than 24% drop this year, according to Mayor Brandon Scott, with nonfatal shootings also down by 18%.

Moore, appearing on CNN, argued that Trump was politicizing the National Guard and emphasized the importance of deploying military resources only for critical missions. “I will not authorize the usage of Maryland National Guard forces for missions that I do not deem to be either mission critical or mission aligned,” he stated, highlighting a commitment to using these resources judiciously.

In addition to military threats, Trump hinted at reconsidering federal funding for the replacement of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in 2024. “I gave Wes Moore a lot of money to fix his demolished bridge. I will now have to rethink that decision???” Trump wrote. Moore rebuked this statement, warning that cuts to federal funding could have devastating effects on Maryland’s economy.

In response to Trump’s actions, Representative Johnny Olszewski (D-Md.) stated, “President Trump’s threats to deploy troops to American cities and cancel funding approved by Congress are illegal, unhelpful, and directly at odds with that progress.” As tensions rise, Trump’s threats echo through political discourse, consistent with his recent suggestions to also deploy troops to Chicago and New York. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticized Trump for “manufacturing a crisis” and misleading the public about the actual challenges facing cities.

As the discourse around public safety and military involvement in cities continues, it remains to be seen how state leaders and communities will respond to these threats amid a complex political landscape.
