The Arithang-Chongrang Gram Panchayat Unit in the Yuksam-Tashiding Constituency of Gyalshing District recently organized a pilgrimage tour for senior citizens aged 65 to 70 years in celebration of World Senior Citizens’ Day. This initiative, supported by Minister and Area MLA Mr. Tshering T Bhutia, aimed to honor the elderly while fostering intergenerational bonds within the community. More than 50 seniors took part in this memorable excursion, which featured visits to the sacred Pathivara Temple in Nepal and sightseeing in Kanyam, Semana, Pasupati, and Darjeeling.

The pilgrimage was led by Panchayat President Ms. Ganga Maya Chettri, along with key figures such as Zilla Panchayat Member Mr. Yadhu Nath Chettri, Panchayat Vice-President Ms. Bina Hangma Limboo, and members Mr. TB Limboo and Mr. LB Basnett. They were supported by RDA Mr. Purna Chettri, GPU staff, and executives from the Gram Planning Forum. To ensure the well-being of participants during the trip, medical personnel and ASHA workers accompanied the group.

The Gram Panchayat Unit emphasized that this pilgrimage was not merely a spiritual journey; it also sought to inspire younger generations to show respect and devotion to their parents and grandparents. Additionally, the program drew inspiration from the Shravan Kumar Award, a significant initiative by the Government of Sikkim that recognizes exceptional service and dedication to parents. Through this pilgrimage, the GPU aims to strengthen community ties and celebrate the rich contributions of senior citizens.
