Tragedy Strikes Chamoli:1 Feared Dead Amid Severe Damage Reports
A cloudburst late Friday night caused significant devastation in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, resulting in one person feared dead and multiple areas, including Tharali market and the tehsil complex, severely impacted. The intense rainfall led to a surge of debris that overwhelmed the region, with Tharali market, Kotdeep, and the nearby tehsil complex being among the hardest hit. Mud and rubble flowed into homes, the residence of the SDM, and various other structures.
Vehicles that were parked at the tehsil complex were buried under the debris, while streets turned into flooded pathways filled with mud and rubble. In Sagwara village, panic ensued as locals rushed from their homes due to the chaos; a young girl was reported trapped under the debris and is believed to be dead.
Damage also extended to Chepdaon market, where shops reported significant losses. Additionally, reports indicate that one individual is missing, further complicating the situation in the area.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his concern, maintaining constant communication with officials overseeing relief operations. In a post on X, he remarked, “Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. The district administration, SDRF, and police have reached the area and are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am in constant contact with the local administration and am closely monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone’s safety.”
