Madras High Court Urges Urgent Safety Report from Tangedco on Riski Overhead Electricity Lines
The Madras High Court has mandated the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to submit a report within two weeks detailing the safeguarding and proper earthing of overhead electricity lines. This directive follows a plea from the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, urging Tangedco to adhere to the safety norms specified by the Central Electricity Authority Regulations, 2023.
Kathirmathiyon, the secretary of the consumer organization, revealed disturbing data acquired through the Right to Information Act: Tamil Nadu recorded 10,718 electrocution deaths between 2011 and September 2023, with 2,041 fatalities and 324 non-fatal accidents resulting from snapped electric conductors. He emphasized that many of these tragedies could have been avoided if the department had followed established safety guidelines.
In a circular from July 2021, Tangedco directed inspections of distribution transformer lines whenever conductor snapping incidents occurred. The consumer group later urged Tangedco to act immediately to ensure all low-tension overhead lines have adequate guarding and earthing with transformers. After receiving no response for nine months, the organization turned to the court.
“We also want the court to establish a committee to monitor Tangedco’s efforts. Although implementing these safety measures statewide instantly isn’t feasible, any further delay is unacceptable,” Kathirmathiyon stressed.
This significant court directive represents a major step towards enhancing public safety and accountability for Tangedco, pressing them to prioritize the lives of Tamil Nadu’s citizens.
