Shocking Turn in Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: Lawyer Questions Credibility of Vineet Goyal, Sparking Outrage
The Calcutta High Court is grappling with uncertainties surrounding the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with the accused possibly set to go free, as per The Telegraph. Firoz Eduljee, representing one of the petitioners advocating for a CBI investigation, indicated that this case might end in acquittals, similar to his experience in the Kamduni case, where initial death sentences were later reduced or overturned.
On June 7, 2013, a second-year BA student from Derozio College was brutally gang-raped and murdered in Kamduni. Despite convictions, the Calcutta High Court later commuted death sentences for two, and acquitted another convict in October. Eduljee criticized the present Calcutta police commissioner, Vineet Goyal—then IG (CID) during the Kamduni investigation—blaming flawed investigations for failed justice in that case.
The bench led by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya has since ordered a court-monitored CBI probe, amid concerns voiced by Chief Justice over potential derailment due to delayed justice.
The case of the 31-year-old doctor, who was raped and murdered on hospital premises after a 36-hour shift, sparked widespread protests, drawing parallels to the 2012 Delhi gang-rape incident. Lacking adequate rest facilities, the doctor had slept on a carpet in a seminar room. She was later found dead, exhibiting severe injuries. A police volunteer has been arrested in connection with her death. The outcry continues as the nation demands swift justice.
The brutal nature of these crimes underscores systemic failures, igniting demands for significant reforms in investigative processes and protective measures for women in India.
