Heavy rainfall on August 17, 2025, has caused the Markandeya River in Belagavi district to swell dramatically, prompting local authorities to take precautionary measures. Following the issuance of a red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Karnataka’s coastal region, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H. V. Darshan announced a holiday for all schools and anganwadis in the district on August 18. This measure applies to government, private, and aided private schools, ensuring the safety of students and staff amid the ongoing weather conditions.

In light of the severe weather, the District Disaster Management Authority has cautioned fishermen to refrain from marine fishing and urged residents to avoid visiting beaches and riverbanks. The situation has prompted similar responses from neighboring districts. In Belagavi, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan declared a holiday for anganwadis, primary and high schools, as well as pre-university colleges in the taluks of Kittur, Bailhongal, Savadatti, and Khanapur, effective August 18.

Moreover, District Commissioners in Uttara Kannada and Davanagere have followed suit, announcing a holiday for educational institutions due to continuous rainfall. Schools in Davanagere will remain closed, while Uttara Kannada has extended the holiday to all taluks except Mundagod.

In Dharwad district, the last Monday of the Indian month of Shravana has also led to school closures due to local festivities. Authorities encourage residents to stay informed and adhere to safety advisories as the region continues to experience harsh weather conditions.

Residents are urged to prioritize their safety by following guidelines issued by local authorities and to remain updated on the latest weather reports. With ongoing rains expected, staying vigilant and prepared is key as communities in Karnataka navigate these challenging conditions.
