Netanyahu Faces Growing Pressure as Major Nations Move to Recognize Palestine

With each passing day, Israel appears to be losing the support of its close allies, particularly in the West. This situation coincides with growing pressure from approximately 20 countries, including France and Britain. Recently, Australia announced it will recognize Palestine as an independent state during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled for next month.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that recognizing Palestine is essential for stopping the ongoing violence in Gaza. He stated that a two-state solution is the only viable path forward and essential for the sake of humanity. As a result, the pressure on Israel has intensified, with major European nations indicating they might also recognize Palestine if the conflict continues.

New Zealand has joined Australia in contemplating the recognition of Palestine. Prime Minister Winston Peters remarked that his government is seriously considering this decision, which will be made in the coming month. This signals that both Australia and New Zealand will align with countries like the UK, France, and Canada in acknowledging Palestine.

In his announcement, Albanese clarified that should Australia recognize Palestine, the Palestinian Authority must govern without interference from Hamas. He indicated that a new leadership should be elected in Gaza through fair elections. After a cabinet meeting, Albanese expressed a consensus within the government on the necessity of a two-state solution to achieve lasting peace. He reiterated that the Palestinian Authority must ensure that Hamas does not interfere and must also facilitate disarmament.
