CBI Summons Five Doctors in Trainee Doctor’s Alleged Rape-Murder Case; Kolkata Hospital Protests Escalate
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned five doctors, including the suspended MSVP Sanjay Vashisth, for questioning in the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Amid the ongoing probe, Kolkata Police have arrested 10 individuals and detained three in connection with a vandalism incident at the hospital, which occurred during midnight protests demanding justice for the 31-year-old victim.
Unidentified miscreants entered the hospital premises early on Thursday, vandalizing the emergency department, nursing station, and CCTV cameras. Police reported that around 40 individuals, posing as protesters, were involved in the attack, leading to injuries among officers and damage to several vehicles. The incident sparked a wave of protests from junior doctors and nursing staff, calling for enhanced security measures and justice for their colleague.
Political tensions have risen, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing opposition parties of inciting trouble amidst the protests. She clarified that the student and doctor protests were not to blame for the violence. Meanwhile, the BJP criticized the state government for failing to maintain law and order, suggesting that the army be deployed if necessary and calling for the Chief Minister’s resignation.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose condemned the vandalism, calling it a "shame to civil society" and pledging support for justice. Healthcare services across the state have been severely disrupted as junior doctors continue their cease-work in protest. The situation has also prompted calls for a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal.
Thousands of women joined the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protests, demanding justice for the deceased doctor and highlighting concerns over women’s safety. The protests, which aligned with Independence Day celebrations, saw significant participation across key areas, including major landmarks in Kolkata.
