Empowering Change: CMWSSB Labourers Union Demands Fair Wages and Permanent Jobs for a Brighter Future!

For years, contract workers at the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) have been advocating for permanent positions and improved wages. The CMWSSB Labourers’ Union is organizing a conference in Chennai to highlight their ongoing struggle, as nearly 2,850 laborers involved in maintaining the city’s sewer and water networks remain stuck in temporary roles despite years of dedicated service.

G. Beem Rao, the president of the Union and a former MLA from Maduravoyal, emphasized that while some basic needs-like safety gear and uniforms-have been partially addressed, the essential issues of job security and equitable pay persist. “A separate category must be formed for skilled laborers, with a salary increase leading to a minimum of ₹26,000 per month,” he stated, underscoring the importance of recognizing the laborers’ contributions.

M. Palani, the Union’s general secretary, voiced the frustrations of workers who have been fighting for secure employment and fair wages for the past eight years. “Those who have worked under contract for over three years should be granted permanent status. We’ve staged multiple protests previously, yet our demands remain unmet,” he lamented, calling for a concerted effort from the CMWSSB and the government to address these issues.

An important resolution is also set to be passed in support of ongoing protests by sanitation workers from the Greater Chennai Corporation. This solidarity reflects a broader movement among labor groups in the region advocating for better working conditions and fair treatment.

As these laborers prepare to make their voices heard at the upcoming conference, the call for action resonates with many who seek change in the labor landscape of Chennai. The Union’s determination serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by contract workers, many of whom continue to perform vital public services without the benefits and security that come with permanent employment.

The CMWSSB’s continued reliance on contract labor raises significant questions about workers’ rights and the need for systemic reform within the organization. The conference is expected to attract attention not only from union members but also from various stakeholders interested in labor rights, city governance, and public service reform.

With the deadline for reforms approaching, the laborers are hopeful that their efforts will finally lead to significant changes, ensuring that their needs are prioritized and addressed by those in power. As their campaign gains momentum, the spotlight remains on the urgent need for policies that honor the dignity of work and support the livelihoods of all laborers in Chennai.

This situation is a crucial reminder of the importance of equitable labor practices and the ongoing need for advocacy among vulnerable worker groups. The CMWSSB Labourers’ Union believes that uniting their voices will be key to achieving long-overdue reforms in job security and fair wages.
