Will Sheikh Hasina Return to Bangladesh? Crucial Decision Looms on Her Extradition from India
Bangladesh’s de-facto foreign minister, Mohammad Touhid Hossain, stated on Thursday that the country is contemplating whether to request India’s extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India amid mass protests over a job quota bill. Hasina, who resigned last week, is reportedly seeking refuge in other countries. Hossain mentioned in an interview that while he did not want to speculate, he acknowledged Hasina is facing numerous legal cases. He indicated that if the home and law ministries decide, Bangladesh might formally request her return, creating a complex situation for the Indian government.
Sheikh Hasina fled on August 5 following a violent uprising resulting in nearly 300 deaths, including many students. The former Prime Minister is already implicated in two murder cases along with senior cabinet members. Ataur Rahman from the International Crimes Tribunal announced a third case against ten individuals, including Hasina, for allegations of murder, torture, and genocide during the protests. Three of Hasina’s former ministers and advisers have already been arrested.
In her first statement since fleeing, Hasina called for justice, demanding punishment for those responsible for the violence. Mohammad Touhid Hossain, now advising the interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus, emphasized the sensitive nature of the situation and expressed confidence that India would handle it appropriately. India’s external affairs ministry has yet to respond to these developments.
The interim government, which took office following Hasina’s ouster, includes retired officials, lawyers, protest leaders, and opposition politicians, working together to navigate the country’s crisis.
